    Empire State Express 1893:
in the 1890's there was a rivalry and completion between the New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroads.  The Pennsylvania had upgraded it s Pennsylvania Limited trains to go faster.  The New York Central began to upgrade its Empire State Express Trains. In 1893, locomotive #999 rolled out and entered service.  It was reported that #999 Empire State Express traveled at 102 miles per hour on May 9th and 112.5 miles per hour on May 10 between Batavia and Buffalo - which would make it the first object on wheels to exceed 100 mph.  However, there was no official documentation.
The New York Central donated the famous locomotive to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry where it has been renovated and is on display in the museum's main hall.
