    About the
    Stratosphere
    :
The Stratosphere is now called The STRAT Hotel, Casino, and SkyPod.  The property at 2000 Las Vegas Boulevard South was originally a car dealership.  Bob Stupak opened a small casino in 1974 called "Bob Stupak's World Famous Million-Dollar Historic Gambling Museum and Casino at this location.  It burned down two months later.  In 1979, he opened "Vegas World" on the same site.
In 1990, Stupak unveiled his plans for a million observation tower that included a revolving restaurant and 4 penthouse suites.  The city of Las Vegas approved the plans despite objections from the FAA and nearby Nellis Air Force Base. Construction began in 1992.  Due to financing issues, Grand Casinos purchased a 43% stake in the resort in 1993. Construction delays occurred and the Stratosphere finally opened on April 29, 1996.  Media from around the world attended the opening event.
Due to financial issues and a lower than anticipated number of visitors, the Stratosphere declared bankruptcy in January 1997.  Carl Icahn gained control of the property in 1998. In 2017, Golden Entertainment purchased the Stratosphere and in 2019 changed the name to The SRAT Hotel, Casino and SkyPod.  Major renovations are continuing today to make the property more current and up to date.
    Fun Fact #1:
The original concept for the Stratosphere began as a 1,012 foot neon sign tower for Bob Stupak's Vegas World.
    Fun Fact #2:
Stupak initially wanted the tower at 1,800 ft. however it was reduced to 1,149 due to concerns from the FAA and the nearby McCarran International Airport.
    Fun Fact #3:
The construction of the tower was highly complicated.  One crane stood 400 ft. tall and weighed 75 tons.
    Fun Fact #4:
One ride that never came to fruition was a giant ape carrying riders up and down one of the tower columns.
    Fun Fact #5:
The Pod contains 4 tanks with 32,000 gallons of water for firefighters if needed.
    Fun Fact #6:
The tower has 2 observation decks (one indoor and one outdoor) and a revolving restaurant known as "Top of the World".
    Fun Fact #7:
There are 4 high speed double decker elevators to bring people to the pod.
    Fun Fact #8:
The attractions on the pod include:  The Big Shot, Insanity, X-Scream, and the Sky Jump Las Vegas.
    Fun Fact #9:
The STRAT has installed drone detection technology, alerting the property whenever illegal drones are flown near the tower.
    Fun Fact #10:
The High Roller was a steel roller coaster on top of the Sky Pod.  It was one of the first two rides on top of the tower.  It closed at the end of 2005 and was dismantled.
